March 9, 2015 - After their first game of the 2015 season against Centaurus was postponed due to winter-like spring sports conditions, the Mullen Mustangs (1-0) opened their 2015 campaign against Cheyenne Mountain (0-2) in Colorado Springs. The Indians jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two Mustang possessions ended in missed shots following the opening draw. The Mustangs rebounded to build a 5-2 lead ten minutes in to the first half, but Cheyenne Mountain responded to cut the lead to 5-4 with three straight draw controls and some poor Mustang clears. The first half ended tied at 6-6 following yellow cards on both an Indian player and the Mullen bench in the closing minutes. The Mustangs came out more focused in the second half, maintained possession and did a better job controlling the draws to build a 13-7 lead with 5 minutes remaining in the game. The Indians added two late goals to close the margin to the final 13-9 margin. The Mustang junior varsity opened their season with a 9-6 victory in a game played prior to the varsity game.
The team will now practice the rest of this week and prepare for a spring break trip to San Diego. Their first game will be St. Patrick’s Day against Cathedral Catholic.
